Galsworthy House residents explore their creative side

Residents at Galsworthy House care home in Kingston Upon Thames had the opportunity to explore their creative side recently with a fun and therapeutic art session from visiting artists.

Activities coordinator Sue Ottoway explained that the Creative Minds session involved a visiting artist and was available to all residents who wanted to take part. It was a great success and will now be a regular part of the activities calendar at the home.

“It was a new session we were trying out to see if our residents enjoyed it,” said Sue. “The aim is for everyone to be able to take part regardless of their age or ability. It is more about the enjoyment of the session than the finished artwork really.”

Galsworthy House, run by Caring Homes, provides the highest standards of residential, nursing and dementia care for up to 72 elderly residents. Located in a prime position on Kingston Hill, the home enjoys wonderful views over Richmond Park, the largest Royal Park in London. Regular activities sessions at the home include ballroom dancing, thai chi and knitting with seasonal events celebrated including Burns’ Night and Valentine’s Day.

Guildford based Creative Minds is an arts organisation which aims to empower and enhance people’s lives through art and creativity. The group comes into care homes like Galsworthy House to allow residents to explore their creativity with the support and guidance of an experienced artist.

Art sessions have many benefits including boosting self confidence and esteem, increasing cognitive stimulation, dexterity and motor skills and allowing participants to spend creative time with their peers.
