Firtree House: Living In My World Completion

Two care team members at Firtree House, Debra Osborne and Emma Wilken, have been undergoing dementia training on the Caring Homes City & Guilds Accredited ‘Living In My World’ dementia course. They both passed the bronze certificate with flying colours in November 2015 and are looking forward to the roll out of the silver award, called ‘Understanding My World’, later in 2016.

Emma said: “This training has given me a better understanding of dementia in general and will help me better understand how our residents are feeling and how I can help them.”

Debra explained: “Due to the national increase in dementia care it is essential that all colleagues are fully trained to give the best care to each individual.“

The course has been created to provide training to care team members working with residents living with dementia in homes across the Caring Homes Group. The course is split into three levels: ‘Living in my world’ (Bronze), ‘Understanding my world’ (Silver) and ‘Supporting my world’ (Gold).

‘Living in my world’ covers a range of issues, including: ‘how dementia is diagnosed’, ‘the most common forms of dementia’, ‘how to communicate effectively with people living with dementia’, ‘how to communicate effectively with friends and family of those living with dementia to achieve an ongoing positive relationship’, and ‘understanding the positive impact of a can-do approach when creating person centred activities’.

This training allows care team members to better understand our residents, as well as how friends and family members may be impacted by dementia issues. It also helps team members understand the importance of getting to know each resident individually – their likes and dislikes, language, family history – and how this can contribute to residents continuing to live well with a form of dementia.

Home Manager, Jackie Cullip, said: “At Firtree we want to make sure all of our residents and their families feel cared for and valued. The ‘Living in my world’ programme is a great way of helping ensure we continue to do this to the best of our abilities.’
