Ferfoot Pimps their Zimmers

Colourful, personalised frames and walking aids are a regular sight at Ferfoot care home in Chippenham following a ‘Pimp my Zimmer’ campaign.

Residents have enjoyed transforming their frames into colourful works of art with knitted covers, personal items, fairy lights, scarves and flowers.

Care home manager Nicki Stone explained: “We saw the ‘Pimp my Zimmer’ idea in a care magazine and thought it looked like a lot of fun. Our colleagues and residents got really involved to make the frames colourful and personalised.

“And there is a serious side to it as the personalised frames are much easier for residents to recognise. This ensures they have the frame which is adapted to them, rather than just using any frame because they all looked the same.”

Personalised themes have included the seaside, knitting, military aircraft and many more. The competition has involved many members of the care team from hospitality colleagues and healthcare assistants to managers and administration colleagues. The winner, Head Housekeeper Marion Carter, was presented with a case of Prosecco.

Nicki added:

“Our residents love using their frames and the personalised items can also be a great reminiscence aid for those living with dementia. The correct use of walking aids is really important and goes a long way to cutting back numbers of falls among elderly people.”

Ferfoot care home in Chippenham provides specialist residential and dementia care for up to 52 older people and is considered one the of the leading specialist dementia care homes in the county.
