Ferfoot hold the successful ‘Ken Shaw Walk for Dementia’

Multiple marathon runner Mr Shaw, who died in October last year aged 71, had been at the care home for four years after suffering from dementia and was a much-loved figure in Calne and at Ferfoot itself.

In total, 15 people took part in the walk, including members of his family, friends, care home staff and even the Chippenham Mayor’s wife. The group recreated one of his favourite walks to raise money for the care home residents fund.

They were waved off from Monkton Park in Chippenham by Andy Phillips, mayor of Chippenham, and walked to Castlefields Park in Calne. residents from the home joined the walkers at the Jenny Wren pub afterwards where there was a barbecue, live band and raffle to celebrate his life.

Any money raised will go towards providing activities for residents at the care home, which specifically helps people with dementia.

Ferfoot Activities Coordinator, Tracey Hannam told us:

“It was a really tough time around here when Ken died because he was such a lovely man and he was really popular. We felt it was only right to do something in his honour.
So far over £300 has been raised and the money will be used to buy some new sporting equipment for the home including an outdoor basketball hoop and some balls. We feel this is a fitting tribute to Ken’s love of sport.”

Located in the attractive market town of Chippenham, Ferfoot provides specialist dementia residential care for up to 52 elderly people. Based around a large family home, built from Wiltshire stone in 1902, Ferfoot has been sympathetically converted and extended to deliver the highest standard of residential care.
