Dormy House Toddler Group features on BBC Radio

Dormy House toddler group featured on BBC Radio Berkshire last week on the Andrew Peach morning show when a team spent the morning at the care home finding out about the successful toddler group.

Mixing Matters – a report on intergenerational projects – was released on Friday morning stating that Britain is much more age-segregated than other European countries.

At Dormy House this trend is being bucked by the regular toddler group – which mixes the very youngest members of the community with many of our care home residents.

Journalist Bridgette visited Dormy House and thoroughly enjoyed her morning with Home Manager Jo and Activities Coordinator Carla as well as some of the Dormy House residents.

Jo explained that Carla set up the group last year. “I don’ t think we realised just how powerful mixing the generations would be. The group has been incredibly successful,” she said.

Carla added; “The toddler group helps to combat loneliness and gives some of our residents new purpose – bringing them into the toddler group and getting them involved.

“It’s an opportunity for the mums to mix, the children to mix and our residents to mix with people of different generation – the parents and the children. As the children have become more confident here they often hug the residents they have come to know and they do look on them as ‘other nannies and grandads’.”

Resident Ann – who reads regularly to the toddlers at the group – told the radio. “I love it – the children are absolutely lovely – couldn’t have better children here.”

The overall radio coverage was hugely positive with both Jo and Carla showing a real desire to get residents involved and engaged in positive, meaningful activities.

During the radio show the reporter toured the home with Jo, Carla and Ann, who explained how much she loves life at Dormy House mentioning the great staff, chefs, her fantastic room and the lovely food amongst other topics. The show ran for three hours and Dormy House was featured at various intervals live throughout. Congratulations to everyone who was involved.
