in Sunningdale, we are proud to announce that our Head Chef, Steve Hardings is one of 12 finalists for the NACC Care Chef of the Year 2018
.Following a series of regional heats across England, Scotland and Wales, care chefs have been showcasing their exceptional talent, skills and knowledge in this specialist field of catering to secure a coveted place in the National Final.With innovative, tasty two-course menus, suitable for a care environment he stood out for his in-depth nutritional understanding of the ingredients used, as well as aptitude and flair in flavour combinations, technical execution and presentation. He is now preparing to go head to head at the national final where he will compete for the NACC Care Chef of the Year 2018 title.When Steve joined Dormy House as Executive Chef, Caring Homes, he had no prior experience or exposure to this type of service sector, but his moral, ethical and professional integrity told him, there was a very real opportunity to improve every aspect of the dining experience for residents. He identified a lack of understanding around dysphagia and dementia diets.Using his passion, creativity and total commitment to our team and residents he undertook a large amount of research regarding the needs of our residents and the experiences that change over time and began developing a larger variety of highly quality nutritious food, well presented.
“Food is such a big part of everyone’s lives, from our early years forming a focal point in many family and community get togethers’ that shouldn’t stop as we age and I strive to ensure this for our residents. My motto is, I don’t want to just make a difference, I want to see a difference.”“It’s not just about the taste of the food either. There’s the obvious safety aspects that need to be paramount, but smell, variety and choice, nutrition, presentation, crockery, ambiance and accessibility all need consideration to ensure a dining experience that every one of our residents can look forward to.”
Steve has all passed all three of Caring Homes Group Dementia training standards ‘Living in my World’ which has enabled him to understand how his food has the potential to positively impact on the lives of our residents at Dormy House.

Sponsored by the Worshipful Company of Cooks and Premier Foods, the NACC Care Chef of the Year competition is designed to continually challenge care chefs and celebrate their excellent talent, skills and professionalism. It also raises the profile of care catering as a rewarding, dynamic career choice. The national final takes place on Wednesday 6 June 2018 at Barking & Dagenham College’s Technical Skills Academy.Here at Dormy House we'll all be cheering Steve on in the finals in June.
