Dominoe making at Home of Compassion

The residents at Home of Compassion in Thames Ditton, Surrey, enjoyed a craft session with Simon Read the Site Maintenance Officer at the home.

Simon took an hour out of his busy schedule to work with the residents to make some large scale dominoes from scratch. It was a wonderfully fun activity and everyone helped. He prepared the oak wood and cut them into  96mm x 47mm size pieces for each of the residents to be able to get involved in the next stage.  He then sandpapered the pieces down, and with the pillar drill he brought in, each resident got to drill some the indentations to number the pieces. Once this was done the residents coated the pieces with Danish oil and left them to dry.

Activities are an important part of every day living at Home of Compassion, they help to engage the mind, stimulate brain cells, and provide very necessary interaction and communication with others. These types of crafting activities help with hand to eye coordination and encourage a feeling of satisfaction once the residents can see and use the finished product.

On Wednesday 15th February they will be working on stage 2 with Simon before being able to play with them.
