Coxhill Manor Swim Squad

At Coxhill Manor, we believe an active life is a happier and more fulfilling life and we work with each of our residents to ensure everyone has an opportunity to participate in activities that have real meaning for them. In May, following feedback from one of our residents and his family, we took Philip for a swim at a dementia friendly swimming session at ‘Pool in the Park’ in Woking.

This initiative is part of The Swim England Dementia Friendly Swimming Project which has been developed to enhance the swimming experience of those living with dementia and their carers by improving facilities and removing barriers. Find out more here…

At Coxhill Manor, our residents are encouraged to maintain the hobbies and interests they have built up over a lifetime and to try new experiences as and when they wish. As Philip used to be a keen swimmer, swimming 5 times a week, it was a real pleasure and a privilege to make his dream of going swimming again a reality.

Philip had a wonderful time and soon found his confidence in the water. The whole experience was so positive that word soon got around our home.

Joy has now joined the Coxhill ‘Swim Squad’ and we look forward to being able to offer the swimming experience to many more of our residents.

Families and friends of our residents are also encouraged to come and join us and enjoy a swim with their loved one. We are always very happy to welcome them along to enjoy this experience too.

The sessions are held every Wednesday from 2.00 – 3.00pm during term time and are led by a qualified Amateur Swimming Association Teacher. The staff are fantastic there – we are certainly in safe hands and our residents really look forward to these sessions.

Not only is it really good exercise but we know it can have a really positive impact as it can offer a sense of mental wellbeing; something which cannot be easily measured. It can encourage positivity and a sense of self-worth, soothe and reduce anxiety, be relaxing as well as an opportunity to socialise with each other in a new environment and meet new people.
