Clinical lead from Knowle Park takes part in research into ethics education

The team at Knowle Park is passionate about care and keeping at the forefront of the latest social care initiatives. That’s why our clinical lead, Maria Dollette, was keen to take part in the RIPE project (Researching Interventions that Promote Ethics in social care) recently.

The research involved 28 care homes and encompassed four separate ways of carrying out ethics education. Funded by the charitable Ethox Foundation and conducted by the University of Surrey the pilot study looked at different approaches to ethics teaching and what works in promoting good care for older people in care homes.

Participants were encouraged to consider the resident and family’s viewpoints on a range of subject areas such as morality, cultural values and philosophy. Following her involvement in the RIPE research, Maria also attended a conference ‘Celebrating ethical care’.

She says: “The whole project was really helpful. At Knowle Park we were already applying these ethical values such as giving people choice, taking into account their cultural background and talking to them about their preferences.

It’s very good to have taken part and to share ideas and thoughts. As clinical lead, I can pass on to the team Knowle Park what was discussed. I can also help to educate our new team members to see ethical dilemmas from the perspective of a resident or relative. Many of my colleagues are really keen to take part in the next phase of research.”
