Celebration of faith at Wytham House

On Sunday 3rd of September we held our first church service here at Wytham House care home in Farmoor, Oxfordshire which was a huge success and was attended by eighteen residents and three of our residents’ families.

Following requests we arranged with our local parish to offer a service here for those who are unable to attend external services and /or visit local places of worship, or would prefer to have the opportunity to have held in their own home.

Father Martin led our service and his friend Richard accompanied him on our piano. The hymns went down a treat with our residents and guests, as well as the Lord’s Prayer, with one resident saying before it had come to an end “this is so wonderful, when they are coming again?”

Father Martin and Richard have very kindly offered to come every other month and we have already booked them for our next service which will be held on the 12th November, to commemorate ‘Remembrance Sunday’.

Retaining choice of worship and faith can be a very important part of our resident’s and their relative’s life and we endeavour wherever possible to provide meaningful activities that make a positive difference whether it be spiritual or physical.  From the sounds of familiar verses, smell of incense, music, singing, scripture, sermon, sacraments, prayers, rites and rituals can be a very powerful tool for reigniting vivid memories as well as encouraging a real sense of calm and peace.

Dementia frequently interferes with a person’s ability to connect with and to benefit from regular religious activities that were meaningful in the past. Worship styles and memories can be awakened when the same familiar items and words are used each service and we are looking forward to offering this as a regular service here at our home.

Rated as ‘Good’ by the CQC, the team here at Wytham House are dedicated to providing the highest level of professional care at our newly-built home, standing independently within the Oaken Holt estate. Together with Oaken Holt main house and the Coach House, Wytham House is surrounded by gardens and parkland extending to 23 acres in the heart of rural Oxfordshire.
