Celebrating Liberation Day at L’Hermitage

Liberation Day is a very special day in the Channel Islands and for our residents at L’Hermitage Care Home in St Peter, Jersey. It is a day of remembrance of the time during World War Two when German forces occupied Jersey and commemorates the Islands’ freedom from German Occupation after five years.

The celebrations are about not forgetting the past, thanking those who fought but also about the joy of freedom, plentifulness and family life. so on 9th May this year, we celebrated in grand style at L’Hermitage with an Open Day featuring 1940’s music and fantastic food. It was great to open our doors and welcome residents, families and friends to celebrate this occasion with us and we all had a fabulous time.

In addition at L’Hermitage, we are remembering the old Channel Islands language of Jèrriais. Jèrriais is an old language derived of French and Norman French and is another very important part of Jersey’s heritage and culture.

It has been said that Jèrriais was important during the Occupation as locals could talk without being understood by the Germans and at L’Hermitage, we have about six residents who are fluent in this language.

With this in mind, we are running a monthly group where Enid De Gruchy, a fluent speaker and teacher of the language, has kindly volunteered to come in and meet and talk to our Jèrriais speaking residents. They really enjoy the opportunity to keep the language alive and brings back many memories.

At L’Hermitage care home we provide residential and nursing care for up to 66 elderly people. Beaumont Villa provides specialist dementia care for up to 24 elderly residents. Located within the grounds of L’Hermitage Gardens Retirement Village, in St Peter on Jersey, our purpose-built homes represent our commitment to delivering outstanding care.
