Caring Café’ at Beaumont Villa

On April 20th, Beaumont Villa, which is part of L’Hermitage Care Centre in Jersey held its first ‘Caring Café’. The theme of the evening was the fundamental role of two way communication focusing particularly on understanding body-language and non-verbal cues.

Colette Bonner, Home Manager was joined by Mary McMillan one of the in-house dementia trainers and Michala Graham, Educator with the Alzheimers Society and together they facilitated the discussions.

It was a well-attended evening where families were invited to relax and share light refreshments whilst exchanging stories and experiences in order to help each other discover more about dementia specific manifestations around understanding and forming daily relationships.

Laughter and tears were shared and the overall sense was one of new friendships being formed amongst the families who realised they had just created a valuable support network.

For some they said it was the first time they had shared their true feelings of distress or frustration or sadness or overwhelming loss as dementia had changed their loved ones in many ways. Family members said they had felt very much alone however, hearing others expressing the same sentiments they now felt the solidarity and understanding of those who were experiencing similar situations.

The success of the evening was tangible and in the following days the repercussions were being positively felt as families expressed the need for regular Caring Café’s .
