Bradbury House praised by CQC as happy, homely and caring

Bradbury House, In Braintree, has been praised in its latest Care Quality Commission (CQC) report for providing high quality care and supporting people to make their own decisions.

The care home was rated as Good in each of the five inspection categories – safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led – during the latest inspection.

Residents told the Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspectors that they had every confidence in the skills and knowledge of staff. One resident said; “I feel I am in safe hands with them all, they know what they’re doing and they look after me very well”

Another added; “I’d absolutely recommend this home, I’ve never regretted the decision to come here.”

A third said;“This place is caring and homely, not clinical. I wouldn’t leave here for anything.”

Colleagues at Bradbury House were seen interacting with residents in a warm and friendly manner. People spoke highly of staff and described them as attentive and kind. Residents spoke highly about the care they received and told the inspectors they felt safe and well looked after. Residents are supported to express their views about their care and were involved in making decisions.

Part of the Caring Homes Group, Bradbury House care home in Essex, enjoys an enviable reputation for delivering the very highest standards of care in a homely and friendly environment for up to 20 elderly people.

Residents told the CQC inspectors they were happy with the food and were supported to maintain a balanced diet. “The food here is very nice and there’s plenty of it. I always look forward to my meals; it’s a highlight of the day,” said one.

The care team were seen to know their residents well. One relative said; “One of the strengths of this home is its size; it’s a very personal small home where staff know people well. It means people don’t get overlooked,”

Karen Thompson, Home Manager, said: “At Caring Homes we want to ensure that our home is just that – a caring home. We are all extremely happy that the CQC inspectors have given us a Good rating in every category.”

Karen was praised by those interviewed for running a well-managed service and being both visible and accessible at the home.

One visitor said; “The manager is fantastic, a really hard worker, very conscientious. The carers really respect and like her.”

To find out about life at Bradbury House the inspectors spoke with nine people who lived at the home and three visitors including a volunteer who visits the service regularly. Inspectors also spoke with the activities coordinator, the chef and four care staff as well as members of the management team. Records were reviewed including two recruitment records, three care plans, medication administration records and records relating to the quality and safety monitoring of the service.
