Autumnal walks at Claydon House

At Claydon House nursing home in Lewes my door is always open to relatives and visitors. Resident Wendy loves coming to my office and speaking to Theresa Deputy and myself, she was in her wheelchair and I asked if she would like to come out and help me to a post a letter that was going to Newquay – it was a birthday card for a relative who is going to be one years old.

Wendy was delighted- we went out of Claydon up the private driveway and there are many beautiful trees that are looking gorgeous in their autumn colours. Wendy remarked that it was still so warm and it was so good to get outside this late in the year. Wendy remarked it makes her feel alive as we carried on for our impromptu stroll.

We then went around the very old stoned perimeter of the home and through an alley to the rear of Claydon. This alley also takes us over the recently updated footbridge above the main rail link to London, we waited to see if any trains came but alas not so lucky.

As we continued we spoke about warm weather and as we got further she could then see Pell’s Pond, she was shocked that this was here and remarked on the wildlife and very noisy duck.

At the other edge of Pells Pond we then showed Wendy, Pells Pool-this is a public outdoor swimming baths or lido in Lewes, East Sussex. The original structure was built in 1860 making it the oldest freshwater outdoor public swimming baths in the United Kingdom that is still operating.

A passer-by stopped and asked if we would like our photograph and Wendy responded ‘yes please as I may forget otherwise and I want to remember our trip out.

Wendy then told us her happiest memories of when she went to Lake Garda and that she stayed in a hotel that overlooked the Lakes-she told us that she had a balcony and the light and views were fantastic she also was quite insistent and told both of us that we MUST go there.

On return back, we gave Wendy the photograph and she proudly showed it to other residents and was very animated about her impromptu autumn stroll where we hit 21 degrees on the 10th of October 2018.
