A taste of Portugal at Rendlesham

Residents and staff at one of our Suffolk Care Homes were transported to Europe recently in an activity organised to celebrate the community that live and work there.

With six Portuguese nurses working at the Rendlesham based care home, staff organised a Portuguese day to give everyone a taster of what life is like in their home country.

In the July sun, staff and residents painted Portuguese flags and made special place mats before heading outside to enjoy a Portuguese lunch that had been especially prepared with help from the homes Head of Care, Ana who was able to add a true taste of Portugal.  On the menu was Arroz de Frango (Chicken with rice) or Poloes a Minhota (Pork with roast potatoes) and dessert was a choice of either Pudim Creme (caramel pudding) or Pastel de Nata (custard tart).

The Portuguese staff also spent time telling the residents about life in Portugal and their customs and traditions.  Throughout the day, Portuguese music was played to complete the atmosphere.

All of the residents had a great day and in particular, they enjoyed the food with many saying what a lovely change it was.  Resident Gwen Watson told us:

‘It was such an enjoyable day and it was so lovely that the sun came out and we were able to eat in the garden.’

Meanwhile, another resident, Joan Fuller told us that she felt ‘transported’ into Portuguese life.

Located by Rendlesham Forest on the outskirts of the village, Rendlesham Care Centre is one of Caring Homes’ newest care homes in Suffolk, offering state of the art residential, nursing and specialist dementia care for up to 60 elderly people.
