Irish Eyes Are Smiling At Cotman House On St Patrick’s Day

20th March 2026

The sun shone and the world turned emerald green at Cotman House this week as residents celebrated St Patrick’s Day with plenty of laughter and a swirl of Irish charm!

Residents ‘Have a Lucky Day’ Celebrating All Things Irish

Everyone loves the St Patrick’s Day festivities which take place each year at Cotman House Care Home in Felixstowe. There’s always so much potential for activities, music, food and fun to be ‘themed green’ and nobody takes themselves too seriously. This year didn’t disappoint and the team were busy early on, preparing events for the day ahead.

Residents were keen to get involved and there was a sense of excitement around the home as everyone was kitted out with hats, beards and cheeky signs on sticks with slogans such as ‘Kiss Me, I’m Irish’ and ‘Have a Lucky Day’. There was speculation about where the ‘luck of the Irish’ originated and kissing the Blarney Stone was mentioned. This turns out to be no easy task as the stone itself is built into a high wall in Blarney Castle, near Cork, and you have to hang tight, then lean backwards to reach it for a kiss. It makes complete sense that there’s an easier route to luck and kissing an Irish person is apparently the next best way!

Limericks, Leprechauns and Laughter

It was time to get creative. A trivia quiz helped everyone learn more about the history of St Patrick, and was followed by some limerick reading, then a leprechaun painting session. The mood was very jolly indeed, and “Top of the mornin’” rang out across the tables as residents got well and truly into the spirit of the day!

Star of the show was resident Helen, who is Irish and proudly wore a striking green shirt. She also captivated everyone by teaching the group some proper Irish sayings, such as, “A good word never broke a tooth!” and “Better good manners than good looks”. Residents recalled celebrating St Patrick’s Day in earlier years and how finding something green to wear was often a challenge!

Irish Stew and a Sip of Guinness

A highlight of the day was Chef’s special Irish Stew, served at lunchtime alongside a Guinness tasting with Irish music playing in the background. Everyone declared the stew delicious and just the thing after a lively morning, with more Irish-themed activities to come later on. At the end of the day, everyone’s eyes were smiling – not just the Irish ones – and as residents chatted about what they’d enjoyed most, the St Patrick’s Day festivities at Cotman House drew to a happy conclusion – until next year.
