Cotman House Care Home Proudly Sponsors Felixstowe Disability Pride

17th July 2025

Cotman House proudly sponsored Felixstowe Disability Pride this year - an inspiring celebration of diversity and inclusion which was held on a beautifully sunny day in July.

‘Celebrating Individuals, Not Limitation’

It was Suffolk’s first Disability Pride - hosted by not-for-profit organisation, Suffolk Mobility Events - with its slogan ‘Celebrating Individuals, Not Limitation’ resonating with the Caring Homes team who bring the same approach to the person-centred care at Cotman House Care Home in Felixstowe.

The day kicked off with a spirited parade along the seafront promenade, led by a vibrant samba band and including stilt walkers and circus performers. The rhythmic beat and colourful costumes set the tone for a joyful gathering filled with community pride.

A Chance to Connect and Interact with the Community

The parade ended at Felixstowe Leisure Centre where, as part of the celebration, Cotman House joined the Disability Roadshow. Home Manager, Kirsty and Customer Relations Manager, Chantal hosted an information stand designed to connect with attendees and share how the care home supports individuals with diverse needs. Visitors were warmly welcomed and learned about specialist services and events, accessible care options, and Cotman House’s ongoing commitment to creating an inclusive environment for residents and the wider community.

Kirsty and Chantal described the activities that Cotman House hosts for all to attend, including the weekly Paws for a Coffee – a sociable drop-in for local dog walkers (even sandy-pawed ones straight from the beach!). They also chatted about their two monthly events – the Stroke Friendship Cafe and the Dementia Friendly Cinema Club – which offer people from the community the chance to meet and share experiences with residents and their families and friends in a safe, relaxed setting.

Local Charities Support Mental and Physical Wellbeing

One supporter and beneficiary of Felixstowe Disability Pride was Suffolk Mind – a charity that supports mental health and wellbeing. They focus on mental health challenges and non-visible disabilities like those experienced by people living with dementia, with visual impairments or hearing loss, or with non-visible health conditions like diabetes or chronic pain - all of which are familiar to many of Cotman’s residents.

The other supporter and beneficiary was ActivLives, a charity which provides accessible sports and exercise programmes across Suffolk. Again, their work resonates with the Cotman House team who recognise how retaining mobility can positively impact their residents’ wellbeing.

Wellbeing was a significant factor in the journey recently taken by Cotman House to attain Veteran Friendly Framework (VFF) status. Kirsty revealed that the process has given her a better understanding of what military service really means to so many veterans. It means she is able to “go into their world” with more knowledge and insight, identifying those veteran residents who may need specific support.

A Powerful Celebration Full of Energy and Unity

Felixstowe Disability Pride was a wonderful opportunity for Kirsty and Chantal to network and interact with the local community on many different levels, something they love to do. Chantal commented, “We were delighted to be part of such a vibrant and meaningful day. It’s essential to listen, learn and stand with those who face barriers, and Felixstowe Disability Pride brought us all together to do just that”.

Looking back on a successful day, Kirsty added, “We were thrilled to support Felixstowe Disability Pride and take part in such a powerful celebration. The promenade march brought such energy and unity and it was a real honour to stand alongside so many passionate individuals”.

Cotman House is a care home deeply rooted in compassion, respect and community partnerships, and where ‘celebrating individuals, not limitations’ is a concept the whole team can wholeheartedly relate to.
