Nursing Case Study - Edward's Story
It isn’t always easy to maintain your passion for the sport of kings when you are confined to bed. When staff at Hillside first met Edward, his number one priority was to be able to indulge in his passion for a flutter on the horses and to catch up with old friends.
Edward had been in hospital for some time and his prognosis was not good. Doctors had advised that he be discharged to a care home for palliative care. Nursing staff from Hillside visited Edward at hospital to carry out a full needs assessment and it was here that he first said how much he would like to be able to go to the bookmakers again for a small bet and to meet up with friends.
The assessment confirmed that Edward’s care needs could be well met and he moved to Hillside. A care plan was drawn up with Edward’s involvement and he soon became an active participant in daily life at Hillside. However, staff were keen to act on the wish that Edward had expressed when they first met him. A mobility scooter was found that Edward could use and he was soon able to go to the bookmakers on a Saturday afternoon, accompanied by a member of the staff team. He enjoyed the experience so much that he returned the next two Saturdays in a row.
Edward still makes weekend trips to the bookmakers and, having re-established contact with some of his old friends, enjoys numerous home visits too. His social diary has never been so busy! The staff team at Hillside are delighted they have been able to fulfil this gentleman’s closely held wish, which has provided him with an immense amount of pleasure.
Edward’s story is just one example of the dedicated care and support the team at Hillside provides every day. If you would like to learn more about the variety of care provision available at Hillside or its sister service Mellish House, please call our Home Manager on 0808 223 5511
