Resident Mildred Celebrates 103rd Birthday With An Extra Special Chef’s Table Lunch
The team at Castle View were delighted to mark Mildred’s 103rd birthday with a gathering of friends, family, and a delicious lunch, created as part of the Chef’s Table series at Caring Homes.
In the weeks leading up to the big day, Karen at Castle View discussed how Mildred might like to celebrate her birthday. On her 102nd, Mildred had received a visit from the Governor of the Isle of Man and was interviewed by a journalist for a local radio station, so her daughter, Linda, and Karen, agreed that something smaller and more personal would be nice this year – perhaps an afternoon out and a lunch.
A Trip to Tynwald Mills for Tea
Linda mentioned how much Mildred loves a trip to Tynwald Mills - a local department store which incorporates a historic mill - for a browse around the shops and a cuppa, so this was arranged for the day before her actual birthday. In preparation for the outing, Mildred paid a visit to the care home’s hair salon and emerged looking like a million dollars, beautifully dressed and ready to enjoy her day. Accompanied by Wellbeing coordinators Karen and Hannah, Mildred met Linda at Tynwald Mills for tea and cake, and they had a lovely afternoon, chatting and sharing memories. Mildred recalled visiting with her husband who would sit in the chair reading his paper while she shopped. On a walkabout after tea, Mildred declared that she was shocked at the cost of a coat!
An Extra Special ‘103rd Birthday’ Chef’s Table
Mildred’s birthday fell on the last Thursday of the month – which is when at Caring Homes, chefs design a top-notch menu for a special lunch known as ‘Chef’s Table’. Hosted for a small group of residents, the 3-course meal is always served with a flourish, and the chef joins the group to enjoy a sociable chat over delicious food. Castle View Head Chef, Garth, was happy that June’s Chef’s Table would incorporate Mildred’s 103rd birthday. Menus were discussed in advance with invited guests – residents Tanya and Monica, and of course Mildred and special guest, daughter Linda - and Garth was able to settle on a wonderful selection of dishes that suited everyone.
Decorations, Decades and a Delicious Lunch
On Mildred’s birthday morning, Wellbeing coordinators Karen and Hannah decorated the lounge. Special menus were printed and Karen and Hannah put up a timeline of posters around the room. In between courses at the lunch, Mildred shared with the group that in the 1930s, when she was in her teens, she enjoyed going to the cinema.
Before lunch, Linda and resident Tanya joined Mildred as she opened her cards, including one from the team at Castle View, which Linda read out to her. Then the other guests arrived and everyone was on good form, especially the birthday girl. Lunch was served in style – Garth’s inspired Yorkshire pudding with onions and mushrooms to start with, followed by a choice of duck in orange sauce or Scottish salmon, then strawberries with meringue swan or baked apple tart for dessert. Everyone said the food was delicious, fabulous, couldn’t be faulted – one resident said she could eat the duck every day! Garth, who had joined the group for lunch along with Wellbeing coordinator Hannah, was given a round of applause and a very big ‘thank you’ as he left the table.
Mildred Brings Humour to a Memorable Afternoon
Mildred then stood up to address her guests. She has a great sense of humour and made everyone laugh by calling them to order, then announcing, “My daughter is about to make a speech – I’ve sprung it on her – and I’ve never known her to be short of something to say!” Of course, Linda was lovely about her mum, and the celebrations continued into the afternoon when more members of Mildred’s family arrived and joined with residents to wish her and sing happy birthday. A birthday cake was presented and Mildred blew out her candles, then enjoyed a slice of cake and cuppa with her guests. She was delighted that people had remembered her and in turn, amazed many of the residents for doing so incredibly well at the age of 103, regaling them with some wonderful stories over the two days of celebrations.
It was an incredible day, blessed with beautiful weather, wonderful company, treasured family and friends, and most importantly, Mildred - a truly astonishing lady.
