Music Plays a Key Role As Laverstock Care Centre Marks Dementia Action Week

29th May 2026

Performers from the local community were invited to join residents at Laverstock Care Centre at a special event organised during Dementia Action Week.

Supporting Beyond Dementia in Dementia Action Week

Dementia Action Week is an awareness campaign led each year by Alzheimer’s Society. It’s an opportunity to raise awareness and to fundraise on behalf of those who need support, and for continuing investment in ground-breaking research.

Laverstock Care Centre in Salisbury is a keen supporter of the Wiltshire dementia charity, Beyond Dementia and on the day of the event, the team proudly wore purple – the universal dementia support colour – and encouraged fundraising for the charity.

Ladies from Local ‘Sing for Life’ Choir Join the Singalong

The care home is also a big fan of local choir ‘Sing for Life’. They’re an informal group who have great fun singing along to backing tracks, generating camaraderie and giving peer support to those who have been affected by cancer. Emma Sykes-Ellis, Customer Relationship Manager at Laverstock, invited Hazel and Pauline from ‘Sing for Life’ to join residents for High Tea on an afternoon where Wellbeing Lead, Barry, hosted ‘Melodies and Memories’ - a popular singalong where he also provides accompaniment on the piano.

Barry launched into some of the residents’ favourite tunes – including ‘Blue Moon’ and ‘Fly Me To The Moon’ – while a delicious High Tea was wheeled in on a special trolley. Cakes and sweet treats were and served and enjoyed by all, but it didn’t stop the singing! Hazel and Pauline’s choir practice is paused at the moment while they search for a new choir leader, so the ladies couldn’t resist offering to sing a couple of songs for the residents and ended up joining Barry for the rest of the event. ‘Yesterday’ was requested and ‘White Cliffs Of Dover’ was performed with real gusto, with residents joining in on the microphone.

Celebrating the Joy of Music on a Special Afternoon

The afternoon was a great success and having Hazel and Pauline along was a real treat for the residents, one of whom sometimes attends their choir practice just to watch. The ladies said how much they enjoyed their time with everyone, and the event was a reminder of just how important music can be - whether it’s a reason to take part in a shared activity, a way of conjuring memories, or simply a chance to gain pleasure from the joy of singing.

Home Manager Erin O’Shea commented,” What a lovely afternoon we’ve had. I’m delighted Hazel and Pauline came along, and for them to join in and perform made the afternoon extra special. We all know how music brings people together and this event ticked every box”.
