Living Life, Our Way – 80’s Style at Laverstock Care Centre!
The team at Laverstock Care Centre believes in supporting everyone to live life their way – and what better way to celebrate this than with a fun-filled ‘Support to Live Life, Your Way’ Open Day!
80 Rooms, 80’s Theme
To add an extra level of entertainment – and a lot of sparkle! - the day was 1980’s themed, with music, fashion, food, and films that had everyone smiling, singing, and dancing. There was another special reason for the 80’s connection. Laverstock Care Centre in Salisbury has 80 rooms and the team was delighted to be at full capacity last month, so it felt fitting to celebrate that milestone with a joyful homage to the 80s.
A Full Day of Fun
The team, residents, their families, and friends of Laverstock came together to enjoy the day and were delighted to welcome the Hobbs Rehabilitation team to the party.
The Open Day was packed with themed activities that transported everyone back to the colourful 1980s, beginning with morning cinema and a showing of the popular 80s classic, Footloose, complete with popcorn. Meanwhile, Jody and Leanne brought the glamour with bright nails and pampering one-to-one visits to residents across all the floors. Resident Bubbles loved the special treat for her nails, commenting, “The manicure made me feel really special – thank you for pampering us.”
The afternoon cinema choice brought a double wave of nostalgia as Dirty Dancing, a film made in the 80s but set in the 1950s, lit up the screen in West View at 2pm. Resident, Win, was enraptured saying, “I felt like I was 21 again watching Dirty Dancing. What a treat!”
With so much foot-tapping and singing along, an 80’s-style High Tea – themed with retro treats – provided the perfect pick me up before the real action began.
Grooving on Down!
At 4pm, the Wellbeing team hosted a Music and Movement disco that got everyone singing and dancing to classic 80’s tunes like ‘Celebration’ by Kool and the Gang, Donna Summer’s ‘Hot Stuff’ and Chic’s huge hit, ‘Le Freak’. The energy was infectious, with residents, staff, families, and guests grooving side by side. Visitor Alan loved it, adding, “The disco was the highlight for me. I’ve not danced like that in years – it was wonderful.”
A Feast for the Senses
The day wasn’t just about activities – it was a feast for the senses too. Guests enjoyed 80’s-style refreshments, colourful décor, and of course the outfits! Best costume prizes went to Leanne and Teonila, who brought real flair to their retro looks. Home Manager, Erin, expressed her gratitude to everyone for making such an exceptional effort – and not just with the costumes. She also gave special thanks to the team members who weren’t on duty but still popped in to join and support the day.
A Celebration of Living Well
The day was a huge success, and a reminder that life is to be lived fully, joyfully, and in our own way. It also showed the importance of connection and everyone who joined in – from the Caring Homes team, friends of Laverstock and local guests, to the residents and their families - helped create a very special atmosphere. It was a real celebration of what it means to ‘Live Life, Your Way’ and a truly unforgettable day.
