Cultural Day At Castle View Celebrates Diversity, Friendship And Community

1st July 2026

On a beautiful sunny day, the team at Castle View came together to host their annual Cultural Day for residents, their families and all the staff.

Cultural Day at Castle View Nursing Home is a celebration of the many cultures, traditions and people that make the home such a special place – and an opportunity for team members representing a range of different nationalities to share what they are most proud of.

Enthusiastic Preparation and Friendly Rivalry

Months of preparation went into making this year’s day a success. Once the date was chosen, staff enthusiastically began planning the dishes they would proudly represent from their home countries. There was already a friendly but fierce rivalry brewing between the home's Manager and Deputy Manager, each determined to prove that their country's jollof rice was the best. Would Ghana or Sierra Leone win?

The team were delighted to hear that Regional Manager, Violet, would be joining them this year and were pleased that she agreed to be the judge of the much, anticipated jollof rice competition. Meanwhile, everyone crossed their fingers for good weather!

Coming Together to Say ‘Hello’ in Different Languages

Castle View’s Wellbeing Team worked incredibly hard behind the scenes, planning and coordinating every detail, from the table decorations to creating beautiful A3 displays about each country represented. This year the team also decided to say learn to how to say' hello' and 'how are you' in each other's languages. Staff from each country helped with the translations and the Wellbeing Team typed printed and laminated them for everyone to enjoy. Greetings learned from countries including Isle of Man, Ireland, Jamaica, South Africa and many more, were a reminder of how diverse the home is and how many different languages are spoken around the world.

Dishes and Traditional Attire from Around the World

Once the tables were arranged, each country proudly displayed its traditional dishes – and what a treat! There was an incredible variety of food from England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Isle of Man, Jamaica, Zimbabwe, Sierra Leone, Ghana, South Africa, the Philippines, Romania, Lebanon and Kenya. Residents, staff and visitors thoroughly enjoyed sampling the delicious flavours from around the world, everyone embracing the spirit of the day.

Adding to the wonderful atmosphere, many staff proudly wore their traditional cultural attire representing their heritage. It was a lovely way to showcase the rich diversity in the team, with colourful and authentic clothing from different countries. Everyone loved learning about the various outfits, and this made the day even more meaningful and memorable.

A Day Full of Music, Fun and Friendship

A fantastic band helped create a happy and relaxed atmosphere, and their music kept everyone entertained throughout the afternoon. There was also plenty of fun for younger visitors, who enjoyed games including ‘Hook a Duck’ and ‘Knock the Cans Down’.

As for the best jollof rice competition ….. well, we’re afraid the winner must remain a closely guarded secret! We will let Violet take that knowledge safely back to the UK with her.

A huge thank you to everyone who contributed their time, enthusiasm and culinary talents. Once again, Cultural Day at Castle View was a fantastic celebration of diversity, friendship and community, with the team, residents and relatives already looking forward to next year’s event!
