YOPEY Volunteers visit Hillside

19th November 2019

Hillside Care Home are delighted to host weekly YOPEY befriending sessions at our care home in Sudbury.

A YOPEY Befriender is a young person who volunteers to visit a care home near their school and befriend lonely residents, many of them living with dementia and are easing loneliness and isolation whilst learning valuable life lessons and vital skills for the future. Three students from the local school have been involved in the initiative for over a year.

Our residents really enjoy meeting the YOPEY befrienders and before long they were participating in some interactive fun together.

These visits prove to be a wonderful bonding experience which are thoroughly enjoyed by everyone involved.

Here is what our residents had to say about their time…

Dorothy Dot said;
“It’s lovely to see their smile; it’s worth a million dollars.”

Bob Taylor said;
“It brightens up my day. We are always knocking the young people but this idea is just great.”

Leonard Plant added; “It’s just wonderful. I can talk to them about my life and work on the farm and they listen intently. It’s really lovely to see them each week.”

The project / scheme was inspired by Tony Gearing, who setup YOPEY Befrienders which has been a great success and he is hoping to expand the project across Suffolk.

At Hillside Care Home in Sudbury we provide residential care for up to 44 elderly residents with an excellent reputation for delivering the highest quality care and rated ‘Good’ by the CQC.

We also benefit from a close working relationship with our sister home, Mellish House, located next door. Mellish House provides specialist residential support for people living with dementia.

Our two homes provide a continuous care pathway offering elderly residents, their families and loved ones, the peace of mind afforded by knowing that changing care needs can be catered for at a single location.
