Tarring Manor Launch Their New Dementia Support Group

2nd May 2024

The team at Tarring Manor Care Home is aiming to support the local community by hosting a regular group where anyone can come along for advice, information or a safe space to share experiences on the subject of dementia.

A Luxury Home That’s Part of the Community

Tarring Manor is a stylish, luxurious and happy home that seamlessly combines the latest technology with fresh, calm décor, plenty of natural light and beautifully landscaped gardens. There’s a wonderful spirit within the care home, with residents, their families and the Tarring team bonding to form their own community.

Tarring Manor is also very much part of the wider local community and Friends of Tarring Park - the wide green expanse that borders the home - is just one of many groups in the area who have welcomed Tarring Manor’s residents and team with open arms. Now, the Tarring team would like to give something back, and share its expertise and experience.

Dementia Support Group Accessible to All

Caring Homes is a leading national provider of dementia care and Tarring Manor was designed to incorporate features that specifically support and enhance the experience of those residents living with dementia. Within this environment, Home Manager, Karen, also a registered nurse, leads a dedicated team who deliver person-centered care, including specialist dementia care.

Tarring Manor will host its first Dementia Support Group on Thursday 16th May between 10.30 and 12 noon and future meetings will be on the third Thursday of the month thereafter.

Designed to be an informal, drop in event, the Dementia Support Group will offer a safe space to anyone who would like to come along and ask questions, share experiences, or talk to others on the subject of dementia. The group is open to all – those living with dementia or their families and friends, members of the local community, our residents and their relatives – and it’s an opportunity to find out more in a relaxed setting. The group will be hosted by a member of the Tarring Manor team every time and will welcome guest contributors from time to time, but there’s no pressure on anyone to speak out or share their stories – it can simply be a source of information, inspiration or support.

Raising Awareness of Dementia and Supporting the Local Community

Customer Relations Manager, Conrad Bool, who has worked for many years with Dementia Friends Societies and works closely with Dementia Friendly Worthing says: “It makes good sense to share our understanding of dementia with the local community. We know living with dementia is a different experience for every individual, so it can be easy to get overwhelmed if you’re looking for answers or guidance. Sometimes, an informal chat over a coffee or the opportunity to ask some simple questions in a safe, neutral environment really helps”.

The aim of the group is also to help raise awareness of dementia more generally, so there’s a better understanding of what living with dementia can actually mean. Conrad has long been a Dementia Friend and explains, “A Dementia Friend is someone who learns more about dementia so they can help their community. The training, which you can do online or at an in-person session, opens your eyes to the many ways dementia can affect people’s daily lives, and how, by learning more, we can be more accepting and understanding”.

The Tarring Manor team has a real connection with their vibrant and supportive local community, and the introduction of the Dementia Support Group is their contribution towards a more dementia friendly society in Worthing.
