Latham Lodge awarded for Research and Improvement

23rd September 2019

Latham Lodge Nursing and Residential Care Home care home in Purbrook has been taking part in research since 2016. The first study was SMART research looking into antibiotic resistance.

Since then, Latham was approached to participate in a 12 month research study, with The University of Nottingham, NHS Solent Trust and Falls in Care Homes (FinCH) into helping elderly people stop falling over.

Sharon Simpson and Jo Taylor have been working with colleagues at Latham Lodge with 24 of the 36 residents living at the home signed up to take part in the study, which is a brilliant level of uptake. The pair have been asking questions and collecting information from our residents and colleagues at Latham Lodge. Linda Gray, one of our team leaders has been supporting with the written process.

The care home is one of 66 homes nationwide taking part in the study which will involve 1308 residents. The research is being organised by the University of Nottingham, in conjunction with Norwich Clinical Trials Unit and is being funded by the National Institute for Health Research.

Falls lead to broken limbs, bruises and people generally feeling afraid. Sadly, falls do happen in care homes as well as among elderly people living in their own homes and the aim of the research is to try and understand why and how they happen.

Home Manager Sylvia Morse Carter and Linda Gray, attended a research conference in July for the FinCH study and were presented an award under the category of ‘Care Home Research Partnership’.

Home Manager Sylvia said, “It was completely unexpected. This is such a worthwhile study to be involved with and we are so pleased with the results so far. Our award will be taking pride and place in our reception area at Latham Lodge, and a tribute to all the staff at Latham for their ongoing contribution to this study”.

Latham Lodge care home in Purbrook, Portsmouth has been sensitively converted to provide the highest standards of nursing care for up to 37 elderly people in an environment that retains a real sense of home.
