Innovative dementia friendly design features at Horsell Lodge

1st March 2022

Horsell Lodge Care Home has been designed using Caring Homes 26 years of experience as well as latest research from leaders in dementia research, Stirling University who are an international center of knowledge and experience. Dementia can feel like another world sometimes, it can mean big changes to a person's world as they know it, but some things never change. Like their story, who they matter to and who they are. So many things define us as individuals, but dementia doesn't have to.

Promoting Independence

Everyone wants to have meaning to their day, and people living with dementia are no different. Residents with dementia are supported to make choices and decisions about their lives. There is always plenty to do, and the team take guidance from residents and their families to plan varied and fulfilling activities to suit them personally. Even simple daily tasks that may be important to someone such as DIY, tending to garden pots or serving tea, we recognise that everyone is unique and so are their daily activities.

Our unique dementia training

Every member of our team is committed to developing their knowledge in dementia (via our City & Guilds accredited training) in order to ensure positive person-centred care is being delivered consistently and enables people to live well with dementia.

The safety and comfort of our residents is our foremost concern and for those living with memory loss or dementia the home has specialist design features that can help people to live well with dementia including:

Innovative Doors

These unique bedroom doors give residents greater choice and independence. The lower leaf can be closed to give a resident control over their personal space while still being able to engage with the people around them. The latest keyless entry technology means residents don't have to use their key as the door opens automatically on approach and is only accessible by the resident or a member of the care team.

Bedroom furniture has clear perspex fronts to help people living with dementia find their clothes.
All bedrooms are fitted with a nurse call system and acoustic monitoring for your peace of mind. The acoustic monitoring system means that residents can be checked and kept safe without being disturbed at night, improving sleep and wellbeing.
Dementia friendly crockery can be easier to see against a table cloth and the lip on one side gives greater depth to improve the dining experience.
Clear signage with icons throughout the home to help residents find their way around.
