Nursing Case Study - Rosalind's Story
Prior to arriving at Hillside, Rosalind had spent three months in hospital. Whilst at hospital she had developed a very serious pressure sore, which subsequently became infected. She had refused treatment and was not eating and doctors believed she only had a few weeks left to live.
When she arrived at Hillside, the nursing team were convinced that Rosalind still had a lot to give. They spoke with her at length and discovered that prior to going to hospital Rosalind had lived with her younger brother for almost her entire life. She was deeply worried about her brother’s wellbeing as he had also been admitted to hospital following complications linked to his diabetes. She did not know if he was well, or how he would be cared for when he too was discharged.
The staff team helped Rosalind regain contact with her brother and she was able to speak with him every day whilst he was in hospital. At the same time, Rosalind permitted staff to treat her infection and re-dress the pressure sore. When it transpired that Rosalind’s brother would not be allowed to return home after his hospital treatment, the team at Hillside assessed his care needs and he moved in to the home within a week.
Rosalind’s brother moved into a room directly opposite, enabling both siblings to see each other and hold conversations with ease despite their being confined to bed. Hillside’s Activities Coordinator and Maintenance Officer worked together to construct moveable tables that allowed Rosalind and her brother to continue their lifelong love of gardening, potting plants and growing seedlings for the home’s garden and window boxes. Their sister visited each day and the whole family celebrated Christmas together.
Rosalind’s story is just one example of the dedicated care and support the team at Hillside provides every day. If you would like to learn more about the variety of care provision available at Hillside or its sister service Mellish House, please call our Home Manager on 0808 223 5511
