Outdoor Activities To Mark National Gardening Week At The Orchard

27th April 2026

Residents at The Orchard have been embracing the outdoor life and getting busy in their own green space – the perfect ambassadors for National Gardening Week.

Everyone at The Orchard Nursing Home thoroughly enjoyed a recent collaboration with Thatchers which saw the care home receive and plant 10 beautiful apple trees. Inspired by the warm weather and a burst of spring colour, residents have been decamping to their own pretty garden for their activities and getting involved in sprucing it up.

Competition to Grow the Tallest Sunflower Gets Underway

It’s a large, peaceful, and picturesque outdoor space where residents often sit just to listen to the birds singing or watch the wildlife going about their day. The garden was also the location for some slightly more competitive activity recently as the annual ‘Grow the Tallest Sunflower’ competition kicked off. A group of super-keen residents gathered around a large glass table and planted their sunflower seeds, making sure there was a named stake in their pot. Everyone is excited to see whose sunflower will grow the tallest, but alongside the playful rivalry there was a lot of laughter and plenty of gardening tips were shared.

Buggingham Palace Spruced Up and Ready for Summer

Residents also enjoyed a recent trip to St Albans Market, where they had the chance to choose flowers to plant in the home’s much-loved ‘Buggingham Palace’ area of the garden. It was a sociable outing and a great way for everyone to get involved and add their own personal touch. Meanwhile Steve, who looks after maintenance for The Orchard, has been giving ‘Buggingham Palace’ a makeover ready for summer with the help of resident, Jean. Steve was involved the conception of this fabulous bug hotel last year – just one of the home’s green initiatives, and a popular focal point for residents who love to watch the activity around it.

Great Spot for a Flower Arranging Workshop

Last week, Lorraine, the President of the Women’s Institute in St Albans, kindly agreed to run a flower arranging session for The Orchard’s residents. Lorraine regularly runs arts and crafts workshops, organises quizzes, and hosts informal coffee meetups for WI members in the community. The Orchard has built a lovely relationship with Lorraine and when she mentioned how much she enjoys hosting flower arranging workshops, a date was quickly set!

On a fresh, sunny afternoon, the garden turned out to be the perfect location for the workshop. Everyone enjoyed getting creative with a beautiful mix of flowers including lilies, roses, baby’s breath, greenery from the garden, and a variety of other blooms which residents could choose from.

Creativity and Tranquillity in the Garden at The Orchard

Resident Anne, said, “This is so lovely being outside in this gorgeous weather. I’m usually not very good with flowers, but I’m really enjoying this.” It was also especially nice to see Erika, another resident, reconnect with Lorraine, as they already knew each other from previous community events and activities. Lorraine commented, “This has been such a fun and very interactive session.”

The garden at The Orchard is becoming lovelier each week as flowers emerge to create a stunning backdrop. It’s a sociable space that also offers tranquillity for those who want to quietly appreciate nature. Residents Sheila, Anne, and Olive are often spotted making the most of the fine weather, sitting together in the sunshine enjoying a refreshing glass of fizz or an afternoon cuppa. Sheila reflected, “This garden is just so beautiful and quiet”, a sentiment that is shared by many appreciative residents. Whether they’re helping to tend the garden, participating in an activity, or simply enjoying fresh air and a moment of peace, it’s a wonderful addition to life for our residents at The Orchard.
