Guysfield Residents Embrace Teatime Decadence With The Launch Of High Tea

25th July 2025

Last week, residents at Guysfield enjoyed an event that generated excitement right through the home – the launch of the Caring Homes high tea.

A Regular Social Gathering for the Whole Home

Caring Homes have raised the bar at tea time, elevating the traditional cuppa and cake to a full high tea service for residents at 3pm every Wednesday. The inspiration behind high tea was to create a weekly shared highlight – something that would become a regular social gathering for the whole home to look forward to, at there appeared to be a captive audience at Guysfield Care Home in Letchworth.

Wednesday afternoon arrived and anticipation was growing in the lounge, then at 3pm, a tinkling bell heralded the arrival of a fabulous tea trolley, piled high with goodies!

Fabulous Cakes and Wonderful Music Make a Celebration

Victoria sponge, Battenburg cake and traditional scones shared space with popular sweet treats like brownies and choux buns. Everything was made from scratch by Guysfield’s wonderful chefs including the Signature Cake - a stunning Courgette and Lemon Cake, from a recipe by Horsell Lodge Head Chef, Gavin Speller.

Meanwhile, regular entertainer, John, was providing wonderful music to accompany the high tea service, singing a selection of residents’ favourites, mainly from the 1960s, but everyone joined in with “It’s A Long Way to Tipperary”. It felt like a real celebration!

The beauty of the trolley is also its mobility and the team made sure it was wheeled in to those residents who could not or preferred not to leave their rooms. It meant that some residents enjoyed the high tea experience in their own space with a carer or a guest for company.

Best Brownie Ever!

The selection of cakes was extremely well received, with the Courgette and Lemon cake proving the most popular. Jenn, the wife of one of the residents said that high tea was a wonderful idea and pronounced the Courgette and Lemon cake a real hit. Meanwhile, the tea time ritual also brought back memories – resident May said the Battenburg cake took her right back to her childhood.

The residents and their families, who are always welcome to join in, are already looking forward to the next high tea service and that includes resident Val who, after indulging in a chocolate brownie, pronounced it the “best chocolate brownie ever”. And with the competition to find the next Caring Homes ‘signature cake’ open to team members and residents, we’re keen to see what the creative bunch at Guysfield might come up with!
