Golden Wedding Anniversary For Mellish Resident Cathy and Husband Keith
Everyone at Mellish House was delighted to celebrate the 50th wedding anniversary of resident Cathy, who marked the occasion in one of her favourite spots with her husband, Keith.
1975 – The Start of Cathy and Keith's Journey
A special anniversary is always a time for reminiscence and Keith was happy to share their story which began with a chance meeting at the clothes shop in Essex where Cathy was working, back in the 70’s. Keith picked Cathy up at the shop for their first date in Harlow, and the rest is history; they married in July 1975, went to Jersey for their honeymoon and moved into their first house un Woodford, Greater Manchester. The couple eventually settled in Suffolk.
Keith is one of many familiar faces and a frequent visitor to Mellish House Care Home in Sudbury since Cathy moved in 8 years ago. He is very supportive of Cathy’s needs and wellbeing, joins her for meals and gets involved in activities, especially colouring which Cathy likes to do. Keith keeps Cathy up to date with the whole family by sharing pictures and letting her know how he is getting on. Keith has a wonderfully caring and positive nature; he enjoys engaging with other residents, relatives and the Mellish House team who are all incredibly fond of him.
A Surprise Visit and a Garden Centre Outing
On July 12th, the big day, Cathy had a surprise visit from a granddaughter she had not yet met, part of a gathering organised by the Mellish team and her family, who brought gifts, many cards and lots of sunflowers.
A few days later Cathy asked to mark their anniversary at Perrywood Sudbury Garden Centre. She and Keith had coffee and cake in the café before taking a stroll around, looking at the plants and admiring the feature fountains. Cathy enjoyed being outdoors and she and Keith were also joined by resident John and his wife Valerie who had celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary the previous day. John and Valerie first met on a blind date, set up by friends in Tuddenham.
A Bond that Stands the Test of Time
Everyone at Mellish House sat down to share stories and memories, just like family. Cathy used to work in a care home as a night carer and one of her favourite memories was the bond she had formed with a resident who was an ex-boxer. Every night Cathy would make sure he felt safe and comfortable by watching some boxing with him.
Keith shared that Cathy loved music, and still does, and was an outgoing person, the life and soul of a party. For Keith, Cathy is the person he’d happily spend the next 50 years married to and whilst a 100th anniversary is probably out of everyone’s league, there’s no question that Keith and Cathy’s bond has more than stood the test of time.
