Brooklyn House Residents Get A Head Start On National Gardening Week

14th April 2026

Residents at Brooklyn House pre-empted this month’s National Gardening Week with an inspired planting session to brighten up their garden.

Positivity Leads to Creativity

Everyone loves the positive feelings that April brings, with its vibrant green and blossom pink hues, and residents at Brooklyn House Nursing Home were keen to give their own garden a springtime makeover. With National Gardening Week coming up at the end of the month, the home’s Wellbeing team decided it was the perfect time to let residents get creative.

Warmer, sunnier days mean that residents are keen to get out into the garden, and pots full of pretty flowers give an instant boost to the outdoor terrace. Skye and the team visited the local garden centre to choose a selection of flowers and some were also kindly donated in support of the home’s garden project.

Potting, Chatting and Laughing

Back at Brooklyn House, a group of keen resident gardeners, including Linda, Cyril, Brian, Muriel, Ann and Pat, gathered in the lounge and were given the chance to pick the flowers they wished to plant in their pots. There was a lovely selection of bright, cheerful violas which were popular with almost everyone and the afternoon session was extremely productive – and great fun!

Residents shared happy memories of looking after their own gardens, and the group chatted about ideas for the home’s wider garden project. This includes creating some upcycled bird feeders - a lovely idea from resident Murial who used to do this in her own garden at home. Meanwhile, green fingered resident, Ann, has taken on the indoor ‘herb garden’ as her special project and carefully tends a mixed herb patch which features cress, parsley and basil, with mint coming next. Once grown, Ann proudly presents to the herbs to Brooklyn House’s chefs who use them in their cooking.

Residents’ Display Brings the Garden to Life

Once the flowers were arranged in their pots, they were taken outside and immediately made an eye-catching display on the terrace. The residents were delighted and took pleasure in recognising which pots they had planted, as their initials had been marked on the rim.

Skye and the Wellbeing team work hard to create a safe, happy place for residents and importantly, somewhere that feels like home. Stepping out into a garden that brings joy alongside a feeling of security is something that means a lot, especially now that residents can see how their beautiful flower-filled pots are making a real difference to the outside space at Brooklyn House.
