Brooklyn House Residents’ Favourite Food Quiz Raises Funds On World Stroke Day
There’s a tradition at Brooklyn House Nursing Home called ‘Quiz n Chips’ – a quarterly event that’s the perfect treat when a special day or occasion needs to be celebrated, and it’s been a resident favourite for over 10 years. Everybody loves a Quiz n Chips night and there’s always quite a crowd in attendance so it seemed the ideal way to combine fun and fundraising on World Stroke Day.
Raising the Raffle and Feasting on Fish & Chips
The activities team sprang into action, first of all making a list of all who wanted to join in so most importantly, they could get the ‘fish and chip’ order in. Team members and families were asked for donations of prizes and these were gathered together in preparation for a raffle to be held at the Quiz n Chips event. Everyone started to look forward to an evening of fun, food and socialising.
On the day itself, a table full of generously donated raffle prizes was on display, including scarves, jewellery, chocolates, wine, photo frames and mugs. But first, the fish and chips. "Fish & chips have always been a favourite of mine," exclaimed Cyril, who echoed what many people were thinking as they tucked in, old-school style, straight from the paper!
Rays Angels Pip Three Musketeers to the Post
The activities team then helped residents to form Brooklyn’s four regular quiz teams: Rays Angels, The Three Musketeers, Mister Pickle and Busy Bees. The quiz was made up of three rounds: questions in round one were based on Stroke awareness, round two was general knowledge and round three was a 'guess the movie theme' section, where film music was played through a speaker. At the end of all three rounds the reigning champions, Rays Angels, pipped the Three Musketeers to the post by just one point, a very close competition indeed. Could it have been that Rays Angels were the only team to recognise the ‘Gladiator’ theme tune?!
Then came the raffle which kept spirits high and raised a healthy sum for the Stroke Association. It was a lovely end to a sociable evening where a everyone had a wonderful time while also raising funds to support the Stroke Association's vital work.
Developing Relationships with the Local Community
The partnership between Caring Homes and the Stroke Association is an opportunity to increase awareness as well as funds, and the Stroke Association’s work with care homes helps both organisations to develop relationships with their local communities – something the team at Brooklyn House are keen to take further as they connect with their local Stroke Association ambassadors.
