They decked the halls and made them jolly at Whittington

3rd January 2019

Lakeside Primary School are regular visitors to Whittington House Care Home with Nursing in Cheltenham, and 36 of their children joined us on Tuesday 18th December 2018 to sing Christmas carols and spend some time with our residents and staff. The carolers sang in all the hallways, so the residents in their rooms wouldn’t miss out on the singing. They then sang more carols in all the lounges with groups of residents. Some of the songs were sung acapella and some to backing tracks with instruments we provided everyone with. The children kindly shared their song books with the residents so they could all sing-a-long together with their instruments. A lovely time was had by all and the activity ended with both residents and children enjoying refreshments and mince pies.

After this there was a further treat for the residents when students and staff from Bournside Sixth Form came to sing traditional carols to our residents. They came last year and were specially invited back this year as they were such a hit! Their voices were wonderful and they sang in beautiful harmony. The residents and staff joined in and commented how exceptional the choir singing was. The session ended with the residents and choir spending time together talking and sharing mince pies.

Our residents have so much to give and share; their opinions, their joy, their life experiences, with the younger generation. Therefore days like these that support intergenerational collaboration have a positive and long lasting impact for both age groups. It breaks down barriers and opens up an understanding between the generations. Bringing the community into Whittington House to share these new experiences has given our residents something to look forward to and their faces light up when they see the youngsters. They will talk about these days for a long time to come and enjoy telling their families and friends all about what they have been doing.

Thank you to both schools for such a wonderful day full of festivity and great community spirit. We can’t wait to have them all back with us at Whittington House!
