A Summer to Remember at Benson House Care Home

17th November 2023

As an eventful summer came to an end at Benson House, we looked back on what was a vibrant and engaging activity schedule, inspired by the shared memories of our residents. We took resident's views on board and set out to try and use the summer as a way of helping them to reminisce.

Cruising on the River Thames with Benson House

Nestled beside the picturesque River Thames, we teamed up with the Wallingford Accessible Boat Club, a local charity run by dedicated volunteers. Over the summer we treated over 30 residents, some accompanied by family, to serene cruises along the river.

The river excursions were delightful; surrounded by nature, residents engaged in bird spotting and discovered more than just ducks - cormorants, herons, swans with their cygnets, and the elusive kingfisher. The riverbanks were full of laughter as we read boat names, waved at passersby, and joyfully shouted "Echo!" passing under Shillingford Bridge.

The Residents' Journey Continued...

Our summer escapades extended beyond the river. A delightful afternoon unfolded at Brightwell Vineyard, where residents explored the vineyard and learned about winemaking while savoring a wine tasting session. Brightwell Vineyard has now become one of Benson House's esteemed suppliers, adding a local touch to our offerings.

Community engagement remained a priority as we visited the Ewelme Annual Village Fete. Bathed in sunlight, residents enjoyed cake and produce stalls, exploring a Classic Car exhibit and indulging in afternoon tea on the cricket pitch, all while reconnecting with old friends and neighbours.

For an immersive experience, we ventured to Orchard Therapeutic Farm, an alternative school fostering cooperation and trust among children with special educational needs. Our residents enjoyed a farm tour, hot chocolate, cupcake decorating and deepening intergenerational connections within the community.

The farm was good enough to also visit us at Benson House. Bringing the farm to those unable to visit, residents were able to spend time with a Shetland pony, fluffy guinea pigs and rabbits in a heartwarming afternoon of snuggles. Green thumbs found joy in planning and planting a vegetable and herb garden, nurturing a multisensory haven that offered not just fresh produce but a tranquil space to admire their collective effort.

At Benson House Care Home, summer became a canvas for creating cherished moments, bridging generations and fostering a vibrant community spirit. It was a summer that many won't forget, resident or team member.
