Nursing Case Study - Elizabeth's Story
Elizabeth first came to Garth House after her mobility had deteriorated to the point that she was no longer able to live at home. She had a history of osteoarthritis and recently had a major knee replacement operation. Post-operative physiotherapy had not improved Elizabeth’s mobility and, to make matters worse, she was suffering from double-incontinence. This combination of circumstances had left Elizabeth feeling very low, believing that there was little left to live for and that she simply wanted to see out her few remaining months at home.
Upon arrival, the nursing team at Garth House could see that Elizabeth was in poor spirits, but could also see that with the right care and support she could make a positive recovery. Working closely with family members a care plan was put in place to help Elizabeth to regain mobility and to improve continence. In parallel with the physical programme, Elizabeth was gradually encouraged to take part in some of the home’s many daily activities and socialise with fellow residents.
This combined focus on Elizabeth’s physical, emotional and spiritual well-being helped her to come to the conclusion that moving into a care home was far from the end, but a new chapter in her life. Garth House’s Activities Coordinator worked with Elizabeth and her family to encourage her to again take up hobbies and activities she had previously enjoyed, including cooking, crossword and jigsaw puzzles. Within a few weeks she was socialising with other residents and her outlook on life had changed dramatically. Elizabeth is now fully continent and enjoys taking an active part in daily life at Garth House.
Elizabeth’s story is just one example of the dedicated care and support the team at Garth House provides every day. If you would like to learn more about the variety of care provision available at Garth House, please call our Home Manager on 0808 223 5507.
