Walstead Place holds Somme Centenary Service

Walstead Place care home in Haywards Heath, hosted a special service to commemorate the centenary of The Battle of the Somme, recently. The service, held in conjunction with Lindfield church, was attended by Mayor of Haywards Heath, Cllr. Sujan Wickremaratchi as well as residents, families and the care team.

Inspired by The Royal British Legion’s ‘Somme 100 Remember’ campaign, the service made use of the Legion’s toolkit which includes a box of poppy petals for scattering, Somme poetry and readings, plus soldiers’ diaries and letters.

Poems penned by soldiers were read by Lead Site Maintenance Officer David Goodrum and Catering Assistant Kieran Rambourne; the Exhortation was read by 94 year old resident Professor David Moffat. The service itself was led by lay preachers from Lindfield Church Andrew Nunn and Roger Schofield, the last post played by bugler Megan Healey.

Jacquie Ferguson, Home Manager of Walstead Place, said:

“Our residents and the care team all gathered in the lounge for this service to remember those who lost their lives and their sacrifice for us all. It was a time for reflecting on the human cost of the conflict and we thought it fitting for there to be a male focus to our service.

The Royal British Legion has been most helpful in providing the Somme 100 Remember box to help us plan the readings and music.”

Walstead Place is run by Caring Homes and provides residential and nursing care for up to 44 residents.

Our doors are always open and Jacquie would be delighted to speak to you about life at Walstead Place. To find out more about life at our home, please contact us on 0808 223 5543 or email Walstead Place.
