Southlands Place welcome Dementia Singing Group

Southlands Place residents and guests were pleased to welcome Dementia Support East Sussex to our home for a dementia friendly singing group activity session.

Families and friends of residents, alongside members of the local community were invited to join us for this musical and awareness event.

We know the positive and beneficial effects of music on can have on people from enhanced communication, emotional, cognitive and behavioural skills to relaxation and is often used as positive therapy to influence behaviour by reducing levels of agitation, especially for those with dementia. Research has also identified a positive increase in socilisation and an uplift in people’s moods which was very evident on the day.

Brigid Sedour, Home Manager said:

“We all thoroughly enjoyed the session, lots of high notes were reached and plenty of enthusiasm for everyone involved. We look forward to welcoming them back again.”

Suzanne who ran the session has been a professional actress and singer for 20 years and really engaged with everyone there, from getting their toes tapping to singing along. She is also a firm favourite and regular visitors to our other Caring Homes in East Sussex.
