‘Popular’ Phyllis celebrates 106th Birthday

The staff and residents of Walstead Place care home in Lindfield joined the family and friends of popular resident Phyllis Dee as she celebrated her 106th birthday this week.
The day itself was marked by a party for Phyllis, her family and friends and all of the residents and staff at the 19th Century former country squire’s residence.

Phyllis has always been very close to family and friends throughout her 106 years. Most of her childhood was spent in London with her two brothers and two sisters and she remembers her mother asking her to buy a newspaper at the end of the street when the news about the Titanic was heard. Other memories include the zeppelins bombing London in the First World War and the General strike in 1926 when students drove the trains.

Phyllis spent much of her working life based in an office and was always very good with numbers. She loved singing in the church choir and playing the piano and still joins in during the sing-a-longs at the 19th Century home. Keeping track of her family is now a full-time job in itself, as she now has two sons, nine Grandchildren and six great Grandchildren, all of whom she remains very close to.

Walstead Manager, Jacquie Ferguson told us:

‘Phyllis is a wonderful woman and a very popular member of the family here at Walstead Place. She loves spending time chatting to other residents and finding out all about their lives.’
