Mellish knit for a Romanian orphanage

Mellish House, in Sudbury, resident Grace spent hours frantically knitting throughout October for a Romanian Orphange charity.

Grace knitted various handbags and hand puppets to donate to the charity which will be added to Christmas boxes to be sent out to ensure the children receive Christmas presents this year.

Grace enlisted the help of Activity Coorrdinators to help sew her creations together. Grace commented “I’m a good person, it’s lovely to help the children otherwise they may not receive anything”. This is really good for Grace as it gives her a sense of place, helping others.

Knitting is a great activity for those living with dementia and has a number of health benefits. It’s great at helping people forget about problems, and manages long-term physical pain as the repetitive movements can be relaxing and acts as a form of meditation. For those who are depressed, it can relieve anxiety and stress through the repetitive movements but it can also motivate them to connect with the world as well. This piece of work has also got Grace interacting with Glenda and has been a great conversation starter.
