Laverstock activities in line for top dementia care award

Barry Pentelow, Activities Coordinator at Laverstock Care Centre in Salisbury has been shortlisted for National Dementia Care Award. He is one of just five finalists from across the UK in line for the accolade of Best Activities Coordinator for people living with dementia.

The award is made to ‘a person who has made an exceptional contribution to the quality of life, health and happiness of all the people they work with through the activities they provide’. Interviews will be taking place in London on 10th October with the winners announced at a gala dinner on 3rd November in Brighton.

Laverstock provides residential, specialist nursing and dementia care for up to 80 elderly people. Barry has worked at the London Road care home for more than ten years and has even published a book of poems entitled ‘The Good Olde Days’ which features strongly in his reminiscence sessions with Laverstock’s residents.

Helen Pessell, Home Manager at Laverstock Care Centre, says: “I am delighted that Barry has been shortlisted for the award. His contribution to making the residents’ lives fulfilling and meaningful is immeasurable and he is a valued member of the team. Whether taking part in singalongs, reminiscing or enjoying the fantastic garden, beach hut and sweet shop he has created, everyone at Laverstock benefits from his enthusiasm and ideas.

“Barry has a following of dedicated residents. He also has a great knack of motivating and persuading them to come along to activities by encouraging them to help with the others, hold items that may be required, and asking for input or singing with them. He has the magic touch.”

Laverstock Care Centre is located in the heart of the magnificent cathedral city of Salisbury. The home provides residential, specialist nursing and dementia care for up to 80 elderly residents in a state of the art home designed to deliver the very highest standards of care.

Coronavirus (COVID-19) Update
To Whom it may concern,

RE: A message from the CEO and Clinical Director

At Caring Homes we are following the latest Government advice and stopping visitors to all our homes, except for essential visits by healthcare professionals who will be required to adhere to strict protocols.

We understand that this may be very difficult for families but we are clear in our duty to ensure we protect the health, safety and wellbeing of our Residents and Colleagues as our top priority.

We want you to know that you can contact your loved ones through calls, emails, video and social media and we will support our Residents to view any messages you send over. We are confident that the teams in our homes are doing all they can to ensure that life remains as comfortable and sociable as possible. There will be a full programme of activities delivered by our in-house health and wellbeing teams.

We hope you will understand and support these actions and any further subsequent measures we might need to put in place.

Yours sincerely
