Guysfield Residents Shopping Trip

A few residents of Guysfield Care Home in Willian-Letchworth really enjoyed a trip to the Sainsbury’s store in Letchworth. Four of our residents were accompanied by three staff members and a family relative and the homes manager kindly joined us half way through the trip. The residents were eager and keen to go throughout the day. Everyone was set to go. Hair brushed, skin was glowing and nails were clean and sparkly.

On the way to the store we all looked out the windows taking in the beautiful scenery that we are luckily surrounded by. We spotted ponds, fields and churches . A lot of singing, laughing and chatter about what we were going to purchase filled the journey. On arrival we all decided on shopping or afternoon tea. Shopping it was!  We quickly got into pairs so we could browse the store. Four of us went to look at clothes, two were looking at Christmas gifts and the other two wanted to look around the new Argos which is now situated in Sainsburys.

After 45 minutes of browsing the store each resident had done their own shopping. Off to the tills we went. Everyone packed their own shopping, paid for their shopping and collected their change.

Once we had finished at the tills and a tiring shopping trip we quickly went to the café in the shop. We all put our drink and cake orders in and finally got to sit down and relax. Each person indulged in their teas, hot chocolate, scones and cakes while we spoke about what we had brought, where we used to go shopping and the shops surroundings. Travelling back home was a lovely journey as each of us was still involved in the shopping conversation, new shops being built in Letchworth and again our beautiful surroundings.

A few of our residents commented “what a great day”, “I feel like crying from the good memories this has brought back”, “thank you for a nice day” and “I really like days out like this, can we go again?” All trips that go ahead are great for the residents. They benefit a huge amount from the sensory engagement and communication with new people. Being in a familiar shop they have all been in before brings back memories of doing the weekly shop, working and socialising. The homes wellbeing/activity co-ordinators have planned 3 more trips for 2018 and have dates booked for 2019 already!

At Guysfield Residential Home in Letchworth we provide residential and dementia care for up to 49 elderly people. You can find us in the beautiful conservation village of Willian, just south of Letchworth Garden City, in Hertfordshire.
