A Burns Night to Remember at Coxhill

We enjoyed Burns Night in style at Coxhill Manor in Woking last week.   After lunch, our residents gathered in the conservatory to celebrate the life and works of Robert Burns.

The afternoon started with a discussion about the poet’s life, lots of interesting facts and anecdotes emerged and we watched a short documentary about his life.  Resident Betty beautifully read out a couple of his poems including ‘A Red Red Rose’  – which bought a tear to her eye as she loved it so much.  In fact a few residents asked for copies of the poem! (One for poetry Club!)

We enjoyed some classic Robert Burns quotes – a favourite of which was a ‘ A woman can make a great man average and an average man great’.   I’m sure we all agree…

We enjoyed Scottish music as we all sampled haggis – both traditional and vegetarian – with a whisky ( Scottish of course!).   We watched short clips on the big screen about the making of haggis and the traditional Burns Night celebrations in Scotland.  The haggis proved very popular – perhaps it should be on the Coxhill menu as everyone tucked in…

And any Burns Night celebrations wouldn’t be complete without Bagpipes….cue Pipe Major Ron!  Ron kept our residents spellbound – not only playing the bagpipes but educating us all about them too and answering lots of questions from eager residents.   Major Ron kindly walked around the home playing the bagpipes  so residents who were unable to join in the main celebrations could enjoy the unmistakable sound and beauty of the Scottish Bagpipes.

The afternoon had to end with Burns‘s most famous ‘Auld Lang Syne’ in the conservatory – which we sang as Major Ron played. A perfect end to a fabulous afternoon.  In the words of resident Ann it really was ‘A Burns Night to remember’!
