Tom’s story

Tom arrived at Magna Care Centre after a stroke and a three month stay in hospital. When he arrived, he was very unwell and his prognosis was not good. He could do very little for himself, his movement on his right side was severely affected and he was no longer able to verbally communicate or swallow food or drink.

With support from the care team of nurses, carers, physiotherapists and occupational therapists at Magna Care Centre, Tom’s health and wellbeing began to improve. He slowly began to eat soft food again, eating for enjoyment and savouring the flavours he had missed for many months. He learnt to use his left hand, reinstating his passion for art and calligraphy, having previously devoted his life to both.

The care team at Magna Care Centre recognised the pleasure and sense of independence art gave Tom, and supported him to use his left hand to create pen and ink drawings.

Tom’s health and wellbeing at Magna Care Centre continue to improve and with the support of staff, there has been an extraordinary improvement in his quality and enjoyment of life. He now attends a weekly art and stroke club where he is able to meet and socialise with other artists. He takes regular car journeys to enjoy the beautiful local countryside.

Tom’s story is just one example of the dedicated care and support the team at Magna Care Centre provides every day.
