Zoolab visit Strathview

The residents from Strathview in Auchtermuchty, had a return visit from Zoolab this week which everyone enjoyed.

Our residents and staff are really pleased to have Zoolab visit the home on a regular basis. Animals are an important part in a lot of peoples lives whether it is a small pet like a hamster or fish to a larger animal like a dog or horse. Some may have only ever had the chance to go to the zoo or a farm but either way it is an enjoyable experience, bringing these experiences into Strathview helps our residents remember these happy times.

The purpose of Zoolab is to bring people closer to nature, and stimulate an interest in science, nature and learning. All the residents at Strathview enjoy regular visits from the Zoolab team and the opportunity to hold some of these unusual creatures.

The lounge was full of residents who all saw the exotic animals that Zoolab brought to show us. There were cockroaches, lizards and spiders plus a few other creepy crawlies. The ranger from Zoolab explained all about the animals, their habitats, feeding and life cycles. The residents enjoyed this day immensely. Handling a variety of creatures is a great, interesting and interactive sensory experience for those living at Strathview and the difference in the skins and furs of the animals is a fantastic, tactile experience.

Some of the residents that like to sit quietly on the sidelines also joined in with this activity, it really helps with their communication and you even find the quieter residents talking with the animal and brightening up.

As you can see from the pictures everyone loved it – with the residents being a lot braver than the care team!

Strathview provides specialist residential and dementia care in a purpose built environment for up to 25 elderly people.
