West Earlham Infants visit Ivy Court

The residents at Ivy Court in Norwich were delighted to welcome back West Earlham Infant School to Ivy court once again.

As part of our local community initiative we regularly welcome the school into Ivy Court along with other groups. The children set up in one of the lounges with the teacher ready for their performance to the residents and some of their family members. As the residents gathered around the children their teacher sat in fron of them to get them ready for the carols they were singing.

The children filled the room with their renditions of ‘We wish you a Merry Christmas’, ‘Away in a manager’ and ‘Silent Night’ to name but a few. The residents tapped and sung along to themselves as the children performed. After the performance the children joined the residents for refreshments, some Christmas stories and a chat. It was a lovely afternoon and filled the home with the festive spirit of Christmas.

Meeting with the children from the local school is very beneficial to the residents especially those with dementia, not only does it help lift the spirits and engagement, but it can also help reconnect the residents with the present. When the children sing Christmas carols to the residents they also reminisce, remembering words to songs that they may have sung when they were a lot younger themselves. Also, many of our residents are parents themselves, and spending time with very young children taps into the happy old memories of when they were parent.

We look forward o our next visit from West Earlham Infant School!
