Walstead Place ‘bakes off’ to highlight Nutrition & Hydration Week

Walstead Place care home has held a Bake Off style competition at a Global Afternoon Tea, in celebration of Nutrition & Hydration Week.

Afternoon tea was served in health and social care settings across the globe, promoting the work that organisations do every day, and showing how to improve nutritional intake for everyone.

At Walstead, cakes baked by our care team and visitors were tasted and judged by three relatives of residents, in a fun yet educational event before the tasty treats were shared around. The winner was declared as the chocolate piggy toffee cake baked by Care Assistant Chloe Leathery.

Other events throughout the week included: the importance of breakfast, hot drinks past and present, fun fruit art and a visit to a local school for tea and cakes made by the children.

Jacquie Ferguson, Home Manager said:
“The global tea party was definitely the highlight of the week, with an amazing spread of cakes. One resident remarked that the shortbread – baked by our own chef – was the best she had ever tasted.

“It was a fun way to impart a serious message. As appetites decline with age, it’s important to tempt our residents with tasty food and make sure they drink plenty of liquid. Everyone enjoyed taking part, especially in the tastings!”
