Oaken Holt Residents visit to Wytham Woods

The residents of Oaken Holt care home in Farmoor recently enjoyed a trip out to Wytham Woods, an area of ancient semi-natural woodland to the west of Oxford, UK, owned by the University of Oxford and used for environmental research.

Inspired by a talk from Nigel Fisher, a Conservator of Wytham Woods, on Monday afternoon 24th April, our residents along with their permits were allowed a trip through the protected Woodland and we set of with great anticipation.

The trip started when our mini bus took us through the beautiful carpet of bluebells that carpet the ground with their stunning colour and are a feast for the eyes. We also spotted a local landmark in the woods, when we noticed the Swiss Chalet that Nigel had talked of, which was brought to the woodland in the 1940’s from Europe.

We also saw the oldest tree which is approximately 600 years. The mini bus stopped at the highest point so our residents were able to view the sweep of glorious yellow fields planted with rapeseed. At the same time they had a chance to enjoy an ice cream purchased on the way to the woods. Due to the popularity of the trip, we repeated it again the following week for more of our residents to enjoy.

It didn’t end there; to celebrate this special place, we organised a ‘Bluebell Week Arts & Crafts Activity’ which was a continuation of the bluebell theme.

Residents were helped to make a ‘Bell Sculpture’ for the sensory garden here at Oaken Holt. Using salt dough, our residents formed bell shapes before painting them blue and attaching to a stripped and smooth painted branch that was placed in a pot. Their sculptures are now proud of place in our garden and a visible reminder for all our residents of this magical place and will bring back happy memories of great days out and the beauty of nature.

Set within 23 acres of beautiful gardens and parklands in the heart of rural Oxfordshire, Oaken Holt is a magnificent country estate offering residential and nursing care of the very highest standard.

Coronavirus (COVID-19) Update
To Whom it may concern,

RE: A message from the CEO and Clinical Director

At Caring Homes we are following the latest Government advice and stopping visitors to all our homes, except for essential visits by healthcare professionals who will be required to adhere to strict protocols.

We understand that this may be very difficult for families but we are clear in our duty to ensure we protect the health, safety and wellbeing of our Residents and Colleagues as our top priority.

We want you to know that you can contact your loved ones through calls, emails, video and social media and we will support our Residents to view any messages you send over. We are confident that the teams in our homes are doing all they can to ensure that life remains as comfortable and sociable as possible. There will be a full programme of activities delivered by our in-house health and wellbeing teams.

We hope you will understand and support these actions and any further subsequent measures we might need to put in place.

Yours sincerely
