Leigh shines to make activities award shortlist

The Ferfoot community had their fingers crossed recently as popular Activities Coordinator Leigh Carter headed to Nottingham to take her place at the National Dementia Awards.

Leigh had been shortlisted for the ‘Activities Coordinator for People with Dementia’ category and following a judging interview held a few weeks before, she was set to learn if she had scooped the coveted prize at the gala event.

Leigh was selected for her innovative approach to activity provision and the commitment she shows to ensuring the dementia-friendly activities she provides are personalised towards the residents she works with.

She has also been instrumental in the launch of the Caring Homes ‘Living’ programme at the home. The new initiative is a structured activities programme based around a ‘five a day’ approach of providing activities that always meet either social, emotional, cognitive, sensory or physical needs as part of the holistic program of dementia care delivered at the Old Hardenhuish Lane home.

Ferfoot Home Manager, Nicki Stone explained what makes her so special:
‘Leigh works so hard to offer all of our residents a range of meaningful activities. She always has a smile and a kind word for staff and residents alike and we are all thrilled that she has been recognised in this way, it is a testament to her dedication to her role.

People living with dementia can flourish with the right type of support through activities and that’s just what Leigh offers – we are thrilled to have her as part of the team.’

Despite not taking the top prize on this occasion, Leigh was thrilled to have been nominated and took some fantastic memories away with her, which she has since enjoyed sharing with her fellow staff and residents.

Situated in the attractive market town of Chippenham, Ferfoot provides the highest level of residential dementia care for up to 52 elderly people.
