Ivy Court knit and knatter

Ivy Court in Norwich began a Knit & Knatter group earlier this year which has been growing from strength to strength.

A friend of one of Ivy Court’s residents has been running the group on a Wednesday afternoon for the residents. The  residents have been enjoying getting together for a chat whilst the needles are clattering away. For those resident’s that used to like knitting but hands will no longer allow them to they still come along. There is always a little job to be done.

The most recent accomplishment of the residents are small knitted hedgehogs, these have been knitted and sold for the Resident’s fund, aren’t they cute! Knitting has many health benefits for those that choose to be involved. Knitting these hedgehog and selling them has provided the residents with a sense of pride, knowing they have created something someone else would like to own.

Knitting also has the same benefits as meditation, relieving anxiety, stress, and depression. Very often they use the same few stitches repeated for a whole project. This allows the knitter to zone out and use muscle memory they have to complete it, which in turn helps residents distract from anxiety and stress. The repetitive movements are also good for motor functions, slowing cognitive decline and preventing arthritis and tendinitis! Who would have thought!

Ivy Court provides specialist residential, nursing and dementia care in a purpose built environment for up to 71 elderly people.
