Horsing around at Oaken Holt

At Oaken Holt care home in Farmoor, Oxfordshire, one of our regular arts and craft sessions featured some of our residents joining together to devise and create a horse racing game they could play.

Starting from a comment, our idea grew as to how we could get the game set up and what we would need. Out came the tools and materials and off to work we set with lots of conversation as to the best way to approach it and who was responsible for each element. It was a really interactive session with the added benefit of getting a game we could all enjoy at the end of the session.

Using modelling clay we shaped the bases so that our horses could stand up and then used a rod which we stuck into the clay to hold the horses head on. We then cut out the heads and coloured them individually in different team colours so that they were easily recognisable.

One the clay had dried out, we spent an enjoyable afternoon playing our horse game and we all got into the competitive spirit. It was a fun way to spend the afternoon just by using a little imagination and some creativity and we all had such a laugh. We even had a little flutter placing some ‘bets’ with each other using buttons for money.

Both sessions were enjoyed by our residents and gave them lots of pleasure in creating and then playing the game. Our residents enjoy socialising together and coming up with different ways to entertain themselves. It’s great to see them working together, keeping themselves stimulated and active and most of all to have fun.

Oaken Holt is set in a magnificent country estate located in the peaceful village of Farmoor offering the perfect blend of tranquillity and accessibility with Oaken Holt providing residential and nursing care of the very highest standard for up to 55 elderly residents. Wytham House, our specialist dementia home is also located on the Oaken Holt estate.
